WMO Pledges Technical Support to Nigeria for Climate Resilience Efforts.

Baku: The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has committed to providing technical support to Nigeria in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. This announcement was made during a session with Nigeria’s delegation at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, according to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Keyamo revealed that the commitment was expressed by WMO’s Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Ko Barrett. As one of the WMO’s Peer Advisors, Nigeria is set to benefit from the organisation’s assistance in strengthening climate resilience strategies, particularly focusing on the aviation sector. Keyamo underscored the interconnected nature of aviation and climate change, highlighting the necessity for sustainable practices across all sectors.

During a speech at the Nigerian Pavilion on Nigeria Day at COP 29, Keyamo stressed the importance of aligning Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace policies with glo
bal climate objectives. He detailed ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources within the aviation industry. He stated that Nigeria is committed to addressing the global climate crisis, with transformative reforms underway in the aviation sector to meet international sustainability standards.

Keyamo also highlighted the potential for Nigeria to become a prime destination for green investments in the aviation and aerospace sectors. He reiterated the ministry’s dedication to positioning the country as a leader in sustainable aviation. Furthermore, Nigeria’s participation at COP 29 reaffirms its commitment to global partnerships supporting the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
