General

Lagos: The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association has expressed appreciation towards the Federal Government for its recent initiatives in the education sector. The commendation was made by the President of the association, Mr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, during a news conference held to announce the association’s upcoming 55th Anniversary and Award night.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Oyedele specifically praised the establishment of the NELFUND, which has enabled students in Nigeria to continue their education without interruptions. Additionally, he acknowledged the government’s approval of full scholarships for students in technical education across all levels, describing it as a positive development.

Oyedele also commended the government for its efforts to address the ongoing issues with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He urged the government to find a lasting solution to these issues to prevent a nationwide strike, citing poor lecturer salaries as a significant reason for brain drain in the academic sector.

He highlighted the need for a new funding strategy for the education sector, which he described as being under significant strain. Challenges such as inadequate funding, brain drain, and poor welfare for educators were noted as areas requiring urgent attention.

The UNILAG Alumni Association has been proactive in addressing some of these challenges by enhancing student mentorship and support, renovating lecture halls and hostels, and advocating for the prioritization of educational issues in national discussions. Oyedele emphasized the importance of government and citizen involvement in elevating the quality of education in Nigeria.

He called on Nigerians, especially alumni, to contribute to their alma maters through mentorship, financial support, or advocacy. Highlighting Nigeria’s potential in talent and creativity, Oyedele expressed optimism about the future, asserting that with adequate support, Nigerian universities could compete globally and drive national development.

The upcoming 55th anniversary and award night, set for October 17 at Eko Hotel and Suites, will be a significant event where alumni will gather to celebrate achievements, honor contributions, and raise funds for the association. Special guests include the Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Ibrahim Shettima.

Awardees for the event include prominent figures such as Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and Wole Olanipekun, Pro-Chancellor of UNILAG, among others.
