Abuja: Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, announced on Monday in Abuja that President Tinubu has ordered the release of minors involved in the #endbadgovernance protest. The directive includes dropping all charges against them. Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, has been instructed to ensure the immediate release of the minors.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the decision follows public inquiries and discussions concerning the minors’ legal situation after their arrest by the Nigerian Police. Idris emphasized the President’s dedication to democracy and the rule of law, which led to the directive for their immediate release without affecting ongoing legal proceedings.
The President has also tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction with ensuring the minors’ welfare and facilitating their reunion with their families. An administrative committee, led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, is to be established to exa
mine all aspects of the minors’ arrest, detention, treatment, and release.
Idris further stated that President Tinubu has called for an investigation into the law enforcement agents involved in the minors’ arrest and legal processing. Disciplinary actions will be taken against any agents found guilty of misconduct.
