Abuja: The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has announced an intensified effort to standardise locally manufactured products, including those from the Made-in-Aba brands, to boost their acceptance both locally and internationally. This initiative was communicated by SON’s Director of Region (South East), Aharanwa Chuks, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chuks highlighted that through the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), SON is ensuring that all Nigerian-made products align with the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS). MANCAP involves direct engagement with manufacturers to certify that their products meet established quality benchmarks, including inspecting production facilities, sampling products, and testing them against NIS requirements. Successfully compliant products receive MANCAP certification, signifying adherence to quality standards.
Chuks further explained that SON has been proactive in Aba, educating manufacturers about the importance of standardisation. The organisation has conducted stakeholder interactions, gathering manufacturers from various sectors to provide guidance on producing goods that meet both local and international standards. For example, leather manufacturers in Aba have been sensitised on standardisation practices to enhance the global competitiveness of their products.
Manufacturers are encouraged to collaborate with SON to obtain MANCAP certification, ensuring their products are marketable within Nigeria and competitive internationally. This initiative aims to boost consumer confidence and promote the acceptance of Made-in-Aba products on a global scale, Chuks stated.
