Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit Set to Convene in Tianjin Amid Global Uncertainties

General

Tianjin: The largest-ever summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is set to take place in China’s northern port city of Tianjin, gathering leaders from over 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations. This assembly aims to deliver a robust message for global cooperation, development, and a shared future amid current global uncertainties.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the SCO, since its establishment in 2001, has focused on enhancing mutual trust and security in the region. As the world witnesses evolving global multipolarity, the SCO has pioneered a new cooperation model that favors partnership over alliance and dialogue over confrontation. The organization, which now encompasses 10 member states, two observer states, and 14 dialogue partners, represents nearly half of the world’s population, a quarter of the global landmass, and about a quarter of global GDP.

The SCO is guided by common interests while addressing shared challenges and upholds the Shanghai Spirit, which emphasizes mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and pursuit of common development. This spirit is the foundation of the organization and drives collective action. In response to security concerns, the SCO has advanced a vision for common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, consistently speaking with one voice on major regional and international issues.

Economic cooperation within the SCO has seen significant growth. In 2024, China’s trade with other SCO members, observer states, and dialogue partners reached a historic high of 890 billion U.S. dollars. With complementary resources and increasing regional connectivity, SCO countries have substantial potential for further economic collaboration. Additionally, the SCO countries have strengthened ties in cultural exchanges, tourism, youth, media, and health cooperation, deepening traditional friendships.

As the world grapples with geopolitical tensions and the resurgence of unilateralism, the SCO’s commitment to multilateralism stands out. By rejecting Cold War mentalities and outdated geopolitical confrontations, the SCO offers a model for global cooperation and provides developing countries with guidance to pursue development paths focused on peace and stability.

The upcoming Tianjin summit is anticipated to inject fresh momentum into regional development, chart a new course for the SCO, and contribute to regional stability and global prosperity. It aims to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
