Abuja: The House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals has suspended the quarry operations of Arab Contractors due to non-compliance with operational rules of engagement. The Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Jonathan Gbefwi, who represents Karu/Kokona, Nasarawa, announced this decision during a meeting with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Gbefwi expressed concerns over the operations of Arab Contractors, highlighting that their activities were harmful to the host community and posed health risks. He stated that the suspension would remain in effect until the company relocates to a site deemed safe for quarrying activities. Gbefwi emphasized that the company’s blasting activities, conducted at a distance of 431 meters, violated rules of engagement and endangered public safety.
The lawmaker stressed the importance of adherence to Nigerian laws and operational guidelines in quarry activities. He reiterated the commitment of the House to safeguard the interests and safety of the Nigerian populace, particularly those residing in host communities. Gbefwi underscored the responsibility of representatives to ensure that communities benefit from local resources, transforming potential curses into blessings.
He questioned the conduct of companies operating without compliance with national laws and warned of potential license revocations for violators. Gbefwi affirmed that Nigeria operates under clearly defined laws and regulations, rejecting any notion of lawlessness.
In response, Ms. Vivian Okono, Director of Mining, Extraction, and Compliance at the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, acknowledged the widespread non-compliance among operating companies. She clarified that the ministry had communicated with Arab Contractors regarding their obligations and continued to advocate for the rights of host communities to receive their due benefits, urging companies not to exploit them.
