Kano: Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo has pledged to compensate the families of the 16 slain hunters allegedly murdered by a vigilante group at Uromi, Edo while on their way to Kano. He made the pledge when, in the company of his Kano State counterpart, Abba Yusuf, paid a condolence visit to the families of the late hunters at Torankawa in Kano State.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Okpebholo stated, “We are making arrangements to provide compensation to all the victims affected by this incident.” He commended the people of Kano State for remaining calm despite the situation, acknowledging their restraint from taking the law into their own hands and carrying out reprisal attacks. During the visit, Okpebholo prayed for the repose of the souls of the hunters and assured the families that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
Okpebholo revealed that arrests related to the incident have already been made, with 14 suspects currently in custody. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the case is pursued to its logical conclusion and reiterated the plans for compensating all affected families.
Earlier, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf expressed his condolences and commitment to ensuring justice. He emphasized collaboration with Gov. Okpebholo to prosecute those arrested and confirmed plans for full compensation for the victims’ families. Yusuf also pledged cash and food items to support the families and assured them that the government would not relent in pursuing justice for the victims.
