Minna: The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has inaugurated its Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) in secondary schools across Niger, as part of its initiative to combat drug abuse among the youth. Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, announced the launch at Maryam Babangida Girls Science College in Minna, highlighting the program’s focus on educating students about the dangers of illicit drugs.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the inauguration of the NCSC is a critical component of NAFDAC’s “catch-them-young” initiative. Prof. Adeyeye, represented by Mr. James Kigbu, the Coordinator of NAFDAC in Niger, expressed concern over the rising rate of drug abuse, citing that 14.4 percent or approximately 14.3 million Nigerians are currently affected by this issue. She described the drug abuse situation as ‘alarming,’ stressing the need for a collective effort to tackle the epidemic, which also includes alcohol abuse, and its adverse impacts on families, the workforce, and the economy.
The primary goal of the NCSC is to diminish drug abuse rates among secondary school students by promoting awareness and informed decision-making. Adeyeye underscored the importance of teachers in this endeavor, urging them to collaborate with parents and guardians to identify and address behavioral issues in students. She emphasized NAFDAC’s mission to foster a future generation that is both upright and capable of demanding integrity from others.
Adeyeye also called upon students to resist peer pressure, refrain from drug abuse, and seek professional assistance when necessary. She encouraged students to engage in hobbies, focus on their studies, and be satisfied with their current situations. Through their membership in the NCSC, students are expected to aid in the dissemination of information regarding NAFDAC’s regulatory activities and champion the campaign against drug abuse.
In her statement, Hajiya Amina Attahiru, the Principal of the school, praised NAFDAC for its proactive approach in educating students about the perils of illicit drugs. Represented by Mrs. Florence Jacob, Vice Principal, she urged the students to take the initiative seriously and gain knowledge on the matter. Maryam Masaga, the Coordinator of the NCSC in Niger, expressed gratitude to the school administration for allowing the agency to conduct its sensitization efforts.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event included presentations focusing on the role of young people in preventing substance and drug abuse, as well as the significance of the NAFDAC NCSC in promoting national health.
