Menstruations: Stakeholders to Empower Women, Provide Health Solutions

Abuja: Her pride, other stakeholders in menstrual wellness have decided to empower women with confidence and freedom from stigma or period poverty. They said this at a launch of a menstrual wellness app, ‘her pride: the pride of every girl’, on Saturday, in Abuja. The event was themed ’empowering menstrual wellness: healthy cycle, healthy lives’.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ms Anjolaoluwa Odunaike, product manager and team lead of the Her Pride app, emphasized that women should be proud of their period and feel comfortable discussing it, even among men. Odunaike encouraged everyone to educate themselves about menstrual health and engage in conversations about menstruation. She noted that many women face menstrual health issues and often feel embarrassed to discuss them. The Her Pride app offers a supportive community for women in Nigeria, allowing them to openly share their concerns and find empowerment in addressing these issues. Additionally, the app provides notifications to help women anticipate their menstrual cycles, reducing unexpected surprises.

Ms Lois Amele, Executive Director of Good Tides Philippian Mission Foundation, expressed her willingness to collaborate with the initiative and urged the government to support the effort by partnering with the organization. Amele highlighted the importance of government involvement in both rural and urban areas, recommending that the Minister of Women Affairs and other government bodies join forces with Her Pride to further this cause.

Ms AbdulKareem Silifat, a corp member and event participant, shared her personal experience growing up in a Muslim household where discussing menstruation in the presence of men was challenging. She expressed gratitude for initiatives like Her Pride, which prioritize menstrual health education and support.

The event culminated in the official launch of the Her Pride App, a platform designed to assist women in tracking their menstrual periods, moods, and cycle flows.
