Abuja: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the bloc is now official, effective from January 29th. This decision comes following the ECOWAS authority’s resolution, emphasizing regional solidarity and the interests of the people, according to the commission’s spokesperson, Joel Ahofodji.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the bloc remains open to the return of these nations whenever they choose. Authorities within and outside ECOWAS Member States have been urged to acknowledge this development. The commission has requested the recognition of national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.
Additionally, the commission has advised that goods and services from these three countries should continue to be treated in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy. Citizens from the affected countries should still enjoy the right of visa-free movement, residence, and establishment as per ECOWAS protocols until further notice.
The commission also called for full support and cooperation for ECOWAS officials from the three countries as they carry out their duties for the community. Arrangements will remain in place until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the modalities of future engagement with the three nations.
A structure has been set up by the Commission to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries. This communication aims to prevent confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of people during this transition period, added Ahofodji.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the three Sahel countries had declared their intention to leave ECOWAS on January 29, 2024, following the bloc’s protocol, which allows for withdrawal within 12 months. The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government had approved their right to exit in December 2024 but expressed openness to their return.
