James Story takes up lead of US Embassy in Angola on a temporary basis

Ambassador James Story recently took over the lead of the Diplomatic Mission of the United States of America (USA) in Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, as Chargé d’Affaires.

According to a press release from the US Embassy sent to ANGOP, the diplomat will carry out the duties of chargé d’affaires, (interim head of mission) untill the new ambassador to Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe arrives, who is currently under a confirmation process by the US Senate.

The note states that Mr. Story joins the Diplomatic Mission at a crucial time, as the two countries continue to deepen bilateral cooperation and advance common priorities in various sectors, and will lead this country’s diplomatic efforts, ensuring continuity and momentum in the bilateral partnership.

Story’s arrival comes just a few weeks after the departure of the former US ambassador to Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, Tulinabo Mushingi, whose mandate ended with his retirement.

In his role as chargé d’affaires, Ambassador Story will oversee a period
of intense engagement with Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, covering economic, health, and security and governance sectors.

It adds that the US Embassy is actively involved in several important initiatives, and ongoing bilateral cooperation will benefit from the leadership and experience that Ambassador Story brings to the team.

According to the statement, as the end of 2024 approaches, the number of US diplomats assigned to the Mission is expected to increase, to support the expansion of activities in Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe.

It adds that the US Embassy remains committed to strengthening ties between the two countries and advancing mutual goals, particularly during this dynamic period of growth and collaboration.
