Abuja: The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has dismissed recent social media claims regarding the withdrawal of subsidy for Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs as false. Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director-General of NACA, clarified in a statement that the information suggesting ARV drugs would now cost N250,000 per dose, with patients paying N500,000 monthly, is misleading.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Ilori emphasized that HIV treatment in Nigeria continues to be free of charge at government-approved health facilities. She expressed gratitude to donor agencies such as the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Global Fund, and other development partners for their ongoing support. There has been no withdrawal of funding or support from the US Government, USAID, or the World Health Organisation (WHO) concerning HIV treatment in the country.
Ilori reiterated the agency’s commitment to providing uninterrupted access to HIV treatment. She assured that collaboration with donor partners remains strong, ensuring free and accessible HIV treatment for all individuals in need.
The Director-General urged the public to disregard the misinformation and avoid unnecessary panic, underscoring that NACA’s priority is to maintain progress in controlling HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. She also warned against spreading unverified information, which can create fear and hinder efforts to combat the disease.
Ilori encouraged Nigerians to rely on verified sources for health-related information and affirmed that NACA is dedicated to ensuring no person living with HIV is denied access to treatment due to misinformation or fear. She advised the public to visit the official NACA website or follow their verified social media platforms for accurate and current information on HIV treatment and prevention.
