Dakar: The Secretary Generals of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) were recognized with prestigious awards at the MSGBC Oil, Gas and Power 2025 conference and exhibition. Eng. Mohamed Hamel of GECF and Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim of APPO received the Gas Market Development and Innovation Award and the Regional Energy Collaborator Award, respectively, during the opening ceremony on December 9.
According to African Press Organization, Eng. Hamel’s award acknowledges his efforts to foster global gas cooperation during a crucial period for the MSGBC basin. Under his leadership, the GECF has promoted policy alignment, market transparency, and data-driven analysis, facilitating the integration of new LNG-producing nations like Senegal and Mauritania into global markets.
Eng. Hamel emphasized the ongoing importance of natural gas in industrialization and economic growth, stating, “The GECF is committed to supporting emerging producers with data-driven insights, dialogue, and collaboration. Together, we can ensure that the region’s gas resources become a catalyst for long-term, inclusive prosperity.”
Dr. Ibrahim’s award highlights his significant role in advancing African-led energy development amid rapid industry growth on the continent. His leadership at APPO has strengthened policy harmonization, fostered joint initiatives among member states, and championed the establishment of the African Energy Bank, poised to unlock substantial capital for oil, gas, and infrastructure development.
Dr. Ibrahim emphasized the need for self-reliance, stating, “For too long, our industry has relied heavily on external financing, technology, and markets. That model is no longer sustainable. We are working to build African capacity, strengthen regional centers of excellence, and ensure our resources drive development at home.”
These awards underscore the importance of regional and international collaboration as West Africa embarks on a new phase of energy expansion.
