Lagos: Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State approved the construction of First Bank’s 43-storey building headquarters within the Eko Atlantic City on Wednesday. Sanwo-Olu presented the certificate of approval to First Bank, commending the management’s sustained legacy over the years. The groundbreaking ceremony was performed by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governor appreciated Mr. Gilbert Chagoury and Mr. Ronald Chagoury, owners of Eko Atlantic City, for their transformative role in developing the city. He invited other financial institutions to follow First Bank’s example, promising that the state government would continue to create a conducive environment for businesses. Sanwo-Olu expressed his desire to see the rapid construction of the tower and extended a welcoming gesture to the Managing Director of First Bank to receive the certificate of approval.
Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu, Chief Executive Officer of First Bank Holdings, characterized the bank’s journey as one defined by resilience, adaptability, and commitment to its customers. Alebiosu described the groundbreaking ceremony as a significant occasion that signifies the bank’s commitment to future readiness. He emphasized that the new head office complex represents more than a modern architectural endeavor; it symbolizes a reimagining of banking for future generations. The building is expected to become a hub for financial innovation and digital transformation, ensuring First Bank remains competitive in a technologically evolving industry.
Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of the Board of Directors, First Bank Holdings, noted that the building marks a significant milestone in the history of Lagos and Nigeria. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their support and to Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, for maintaining the stability of Nigeria’s banking industry.
Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State promised ongoing support for the bank, recognizing the project as a bold move by First Bank. He highlighted the bank’s extensive global network and envisioned the building as a future learning hub for the financial sector. Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State also praised the bank’s efforts, acknowledging its evolution since its creation in 1894 into a generational institution.
