Abuja: Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), emphasized that the FCT Administration is committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in the battle against cancer. Speaking at an event organized by the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) to mark World Cancer Day 2025, Mahmoud highlighted the importance of inclusive and sustained efforts to combat the disease.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mahmoud underscored the necessity of collaboration to effectively tackle cancer, stating that the FCT Administration is dedicated to forming strategic partnerships with organizations like NICRAT. These partnerships aim to enhance cancer awareness, improve capacity for prevention and early detection, and ultimately increase access to screening and treatment services.
The minister also noted that the FCT Administration is actively investing in infrastructure and taking deliberate measures to strengthen the healthcare system. These actions are intended to ensure that FCT residents have improved access to quality healthcare services, including those related to cancer prevention and treatment.
Mahmoud praised NICRAT for its commitment to advancing cancer prevention, treatment, and research in Nigeria. She highlighted NICRAT’s dedication to raising awareness and fostering collaboration, which has been crucial in driving impactful interventions to improve health outcomes and save lives.
Earlier, Prof. Usman Aliyu, Director-General of NICRAT, spoke about the goals of World Cancer Day, which include raising awareness, improving education, and catalyzing joint action for cancer prevention. He also noted that the event aimed to mobilize support for individuals affected by the disease.
Aliyu emphasized the theme for 2025, ‘United by Unique,’ which focuses on the importance of collaboration in developing inclusive cancer solutions worldwide. He stated that NICRAT has consistently worked with local and international partners in training cancer workforce, research, and preventive measures, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector, particularly in cancer care.
