Lagos: Team Nigeria is set to depart for the 11th edition of the Kwibuka T20 Women’s Cricket tournament in Kigali, Rwanda. The team, comprising 14 players and six officials, will leave the country on Sunday evening from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos enroute to Kigali.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, this will be Nigeria’s fifth appearance in the tournament, with their best performance occurring in 2024 when they finished in fourth place among eight teams. The coach of the team, Leke Oyede, expressed optimism about a better outcome this time around.
“We have had series of trainings, especially as members of the team took part in the just concluded National Sports Festival,” Oyede stated. He acknowledged the absence of three key squad members-Piety Lucky, Peculiar Agboya, and Victory Igbenedion-due to academic commitments. However, he emphasized that the team remains balanced and ready for competition. “This time, we will do our best to ensure a better outing than the previous performances,” he added.
A total of nine teams will participate in the tournament, which is held in remembrance of the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
