Lagos: The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, Prof. Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, has stated that the introduction of a computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will enhance the objective evaluation of candidates. Lafiaji-Okuneye shared her insights during an interview in Lagos.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor’s remarks come in light of the West African Examination Council (WAEC)’s decision to conduct future examinations using the Computer Based Test (CBT) format. Lafiaji-Okuneye expressed that computer-based exams could effectively reduce fraudulent activities associated with traditional testing methods. She views this shift towards CBT as a significant change from past practices, suggesting it’s a positive development.

She emphasized the importance of integrating modern technology across all sectors of Nigeria’s economy to increase efficiency. Acknowledging potential challenges with this new approach, Lafiaji-Okuneye pointed to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s initial struggles with CBT, which improved over time. She is confident that WAEC possesses the necessary resources to set up CBT centers nationwide and has likely performed thorough analyses before implementing this change.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the growing trend of online transactions and meetings, even in informal sectors, urging students to embrace computer training. This, she believes, will better equip them to perform in the evolving global landscape. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that WAEC had announced in April that the computer-based format for WASSCE would commence for school candidates in 2026.
