LAGOS: Arts and Vibes, a platform dedicated to showcasing the potential of Northern Nigeria through arts and culture, took the stage in Lagos on Saturday with a mission to challenge stereotypes and reshape perceptions of the North. The two-day event, hosted at the British Council, carries the theme ‘Mindscapes of the North,’ and features 22 artists presenting 41 pieces that depict the cultural, lifestyle, and religious dimensions of Northern Nigerians through diverse artworks.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the initiative, founded in 2021 and inspired by Kaduna State’s vibrant artistic and literary scene, aims to break away from stereotypes by narrating Northern stories through art. Suchet Baba, Festival Director of Arts and Vibes, emphasized the exhibition’s purpose of unveiling the abundant potential and untold stories of the North. She noted that the region often remains overshadowed by other parts of Nigeria, especially the East and Southwest, and called for a shift in media reporting to alter the
negative perception of the North.
Baba highlighted the exhibition’s role in offering Northern artists, from states such as Kano, Kaduna, and Plateau, a platform to display their work. Over its four-year existence, Arts and Vibes has attracted over 1,000 attendees and showcased about 80 artists. She urged Nigerians to rethink their views on northerners and embrace a change in perception.
Abraham Seriki, the Operations Manager, explained that the event’s theme seeks to address the mental perspectives of an average northerner’s approach to life. He highlighted the importance of breaking down popular norms and fostering constructive conversations about stereotypes. Seriki stressed the value placed on quality of life over standard measures often associated with success.
Artists like Williams Chechet, a Visual Artist and Illustrator from Kaduna, expressed satisfaction in educating others through art, while Khadija Dikko, a Textile Designer, aims to preserve cultural heritage through her creations. Both artists e
mphasized the diverse cultural landscape beyond the well-known Hausa tribe in the North.
