Anambra State Initiates Digital Registration for Hotels to Combat Insecurity

Awka: The Anambra Government has initiated a digital registration process for hotels and entertainment centers across the state as a strategic move to address security concerns. Mr. Don Onyenji, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, made this announcement during a one-day interactive session with hotel owners in Awka.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Onyenji emphasized the critical role of security in the tourism and entertainment sectors, stating that the digitalization initiative aims to monitor the operations of these establishments. The process will help identify challenges, provide solutions, and enhance service standards. The Anambra State Government is determined to make the state an attractive location for investment and leisure, indicating a commitment to restructuring these industries to meet international standards.

Onyenji highlighted the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure, with 700 kilometers of roads under construction and rehabilitation, of which 400 kilometers have been completed. This development is expected to support the burgeoning hotel industry and the establishment of five new tourism centers. A master plan is also in the works to promote rural tourism development.

He stressed the importance of adhering to international standards within the hospitality industry, which is a key reason for the digitalization initiative and the enforcement of the ‘Homeland Security Law’. Deputy Governor Gilbert Ibezim urged hotel operators to familiarize themselves with this law to enhance security and attract investments. He also recommended installing functional Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to further bolster security measures.

Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Christian Udechukwu, encouraged hoteliers to allocate funds for facility upgrades to comply with international standards and the Homeland Security Law. Mr. Kingsley Ezika, Senior Special Adviser on Security (anti-cultism), explained that the law requires hotels to profile guests using valid government-issued identification, with details being sent to the government for record-keeping.

Chief Ifeanyi Nwokoye, Chairman of the Association of Hotel Owners in the state, pledged compliance with government regulations and requested improvements in power supply and a reduction in multiple taxation to reduce operational costs. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Anambra State Homeland Security Law was enacted on January 17, 2025, to combat crime and restore the state’s integrity. The meeting included representatives from the police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
