A’Ibom Governor Restricts Press Statements to Authorized Officials

Uyo: Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has issued a directive to the incoming State Executive Council (EXCO) members, cautioning them against releasing press statements without prior approval from the Secretary to the State Government. This announcement was made during a Sunday service held at the Uyo Archdiocesan Headquarters of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Itiam Etoi in Uyo.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Eno emphasized that only the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and the incoming Commissioner for Information are authorized to issue press statements on behalf of the government. He called upon citizens and government officials to consistently promote peace and unity within the state, encouraging ongoing efforts to foster harmony.

The governor urged officials to perform their responsibilities with decorum, avoiding any actions that could disturb the peace and unity of the state. He noted that this clarification was essential before forming the new Executive Council and assured that the team being assembled is focused on executing the ARISE Agenda.

Eno stated, “No government appointee has the right to issue a press statement without clearance from the Secretary to Government,” and highlighted the need for cooperation to prevent unnecessary disruptions. He reiterated that only the Commissioner for Information and the Chief Press Secretary possess the authority to speak on behalf of the Akwa Ibom State Government.

The governor further stressed the importance of maintaining decency and decorum in the state, aiming to ensure the growth of peace and unity. He expressed confidence that through collective efforts, the benefits of democracy would be delivered to the people.

Eno also encouraged appointees to draw inspiration from the Biblical Joseph from the Egyptian cabinet, promoting a forgiving spirit and contributing to the state’s development. He lauded the Church for its organization and praised the homilist’s message on peace and harmony, reaffirming his commitment to supporting the Christian community in Akwa Ibom.

Earlier in the service, the Methodist Archbishop of Uyo, Rev. John Ene Koko-Bassey, delivered a sermon on ‘Forgiveness,’ drawing from Genesis 45:3-5. He urged Christians to follow Joseph’s example of forgiveness in the face of offences.
