Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, near Toronto, will present the first of six events in the 2017 season
MISSISSAUGA, ON – This weekend, at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, east of Toronto, Ontario, the third season of the Nissan Micra Cup will begin. After an exceptional first year in 2015, which had revealed the series to the general public, the 2016 season was disputed as never before by an increasingly wide range of drivers, conquered by the multiple assets of the series.
This year, the Nissan Micra Cup will feature two events in Ontario and four in Quebec, the province that saw the series begin. Two races will be scheduled for each of them, for a total of twelve heats, and all will count in the total points in each driver’s championship. It will also be the first time in its history that the Nissan Micra Cup will perform at the CTMP as part of the Victoria Day Weekend SpeedFest, a traditional meeting in the Canadian motor sport world that attracts thousands of Spectators come for the NASCAR, Endurance and … now also for the Nissan Micra Cup!
The Nissan Micra is an all-rounder of the Nissan Micra, which is virtually standard, with a plethora of pilots from Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and even Australia! Indeed, for the first time in its history, the Nissan Micra Cup welcomes a young pilot originating from Brisbane, Australia, Keishi Ayukai. After participating in the Nissan GT Academy on the Silverstone circuit in England, he decided to pursue his career in motorsport, fly on his own, and bet on the Canadian Nissan Micra Cup for the 2017 season.
It will be interesting to see Ayukai progress in the series of the series, he who must learn the circuits and will have to face experienced drivers at the forefront, such as champions 2015 Olivier Bedard and 2016 Xavier Coupal, Alberto Stefan Rzadzinski, recent revelation of the “Race of Champions in the United States, Kevin King and his teammate rookie of the year 2016 Stefan Gauthier, Valerie Limoges and many others, all back in the Nissan Micra Cup this year.
Although most of the drivers who started last year are back, the starting grid is also being expanded by about a dozen new drivers. Never seen ! In addition to the Australian Ayukai, there will be in action the young pilot of karting autistic Austin Riley, who will have one of the cars of the team Azure Racing Team of Metod Topolnik, itself pilot. Several members of the family of Michel Barrette, the humorist and comedian known to all in Quebec, are also registered. During the first weekend of competition at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, his sons Nicolas and Martin will be on the track.
The Toronto-based agency, The Motorsport Agency, will also be on course this season, with eleven riders participating in the selection to get the wheel of the team in the series. The winner will be announced before the start of the race weekend and will make his debut at the wheel of the Nissan Micra “The Motorsport Agency” in this first event.
Another novelty will be the creation of the Senior category, reserved for pilots aged 40 and over. As for the winners of all categories, a second podium will be dedicated to them with spare parts offered by Nissan Parts and Accessories.
This first rendezvous 2017 will also be an opportunity for the owners of Nissan Micra to discover the series and the family atmosphere that reigns in its paddocks. Indeed, at every Nissan Micra Cup event, Nissan Canada offers two free entries to each owner of Nissan Micra who will be registered to be invited. It’s complete for this first weekend, however, interested people can still sign up for the following event at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, the following week.
This will not be the only activity that brings together the fans, competitors and team mates of the series and Nissan Micra road owners. A parade on the trail of the owners of Nissan Z will also be proposed Sunday, as well as an autograph session of the pilots of the Nissan Micra Cup where the public as a whole is invited. This will take place on Sunday, between noon 15 and noon 45, at the Nissan activity zone on the site. A zone that will be open both Saturday and Sunday and will offer many animations.
On track, after free practice sessions Thursday and Friday morning, the drivers of the Nissan Micra Cup will compete in the only qualifying session Friday from 15:40 to 16:10. Saturday, the start of the first race of the season 2017 will be given at 17:05, followed Sunday of the second race, at 15:00 hours. The two races are of thirty minutes duration.
