NAMIBIA ELIMINATED FROM 2019 AFRICAN UNDER-20 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

WINDHOEK– Namibia have been eliminated from the 2019 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament after losing to Botswana in the first qualifying round on the away goals rule.

The home team drew 1-1 with Botswana here Sunday in the second leg of the first qualifying round encounter at Sam Nujom Stadium here after drawing 0-0 in the first leg in Gaborone three weeks ago. The result means Botswana have qualified for the next round of the competition on the away goals advantage.

Botswana will meet Congo in the second round preliminary qualifiers.

Sunday’s match here was played before only about 300 supporters. The Young Warriors found the going tough as Botswana had more of the balland their cause was not helped when they were to 10 men in the 37th minute after Johannes Hollombach was tackled by Kitso Mangolo of Botswana and he retaliated, forcing the referee to show him the red card.

In the second half, Botswana took the lead through brilliant running and individual play by Thabang Khuduga, who beat the Namibian midfield and defence. Namibia managed to equalise in the 77th minute after Hubert Mingeri’s long shot from a restart found substitute Bethuel Muzeu, who chipped the oncoming goalkeeper.

However, Botswana held on the end to go through to the next round.
