Harmonised Identity System to Enhance Security and Development in Nigeria: Tinubu

Abuja: President Bola Tinubu emphasized the significant impact of a harmonised national identity system on Nigeria’s security and socio-economic landscape. Speaking at the 7th National Day of Identity Day event organized by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the role of the National Identity Number (NIN) as a pivotal element in advancing good governance, security, and opportunities for Nigerians.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. George Akume, remarked that the NIN is a vital tool that enhances governance, builds trust, and opens up new opportunities. “The benefits of a secure and trusted identity system are immense. For our economy, it means greater inclusion, better planning, and stronger financial systems. For security, it means accurate identification, reduced criminal exploitation, and more effective protection of our people,” Tinubu stated.

He further noted the critical role of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in securing digital platforms, underscoring its importance in educational access, business registration, immigration, data collection, taxation, electoral integrity, and student admissions. “Today, the NIN enables students to access educational loans through NELFUND, supports business registration at the Corporate Affairs Commission, and strengthens the operations of the Nigeria Immigration Service,” he explained.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted the importance of identity management in ensuring public accountability. He stressed the need for procurement transparency, continuous testing, and alignment with international standards to achieve a successful system. “It demands procurement transparency, continuous penetration testing, third-party conformity assessments, and clear market rules for Certificate Authorities and Registration Authorities,” he added.

Bisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General of NIMC, reiterated that the NIN, supported by PKI, serves as a gateway to opportunities, security, and dignity for all Nigerians. She called for strengthened collaborations and expanded technological solutions to ensure inclusivity. “Through continued partnerships with government agencies, the private sector, and our regional neighbors we will keep setting the pace for Africa,” she concluded.
