ADDIS ABABA– China will further enhance peace and security co-operation with the African Union (AU), says Chinese Ambassador to the AU Kuang Weilin.
Kuang told Xinhua here Sunday that peace and security is a major area in which China co-operates with the AU and its member countries with military assistance and security training programmes.
Speaking at the end of the 7th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, held at the northern Ethiopian city of Bahir Dar over the weekend, Kuang sad China was working closely with the AU to implement a 2015 pledge to provide 100 million US dollars in military aid to the African Standby Force (ASF).
“I understand that a lot of progress has been made regarding the implementation in providing peacekeeping equipment. Very soon we will see the outcome of the implementation,” he added.
“Without peace and security there can be no development, so we will do as much as we can to contribute to the peace and security of the continent.”
The Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa is an annual gathering platform for African leaders, stakeholders and thought leaders to collaboratively engage in exploring and exchanging ideas on African-led solutions to security challenges. Held in Tana, Ethiopia, it is an independent initiative launched in 2012 by a group of renowned Africans including the former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Ethiopian prime minister, Meles Zenawi.
During the Tana Forum, heads of state, academics, experts, policymakers and members of the public society discuss African-led solutions to peace and security challenges on the continent over two days informally under an African tradition of “talking under the baobab” tree.
