‫سوف يجمع برنامج شركة “غازبروم” لكرة القدم من أجل الصداقة 2018 الأطفال من 211 دولة ومنطقة

موسكو، 15 فبراير/ شباط من العام – 2018 احتضنت موسكو اليوم قرعة السحب المفتوح لبرنامج كرة القدم من أجل الصداقة. كرة القدم من أجل الصداقة هو برنامج اجتماعي عالمي خاص بالأطفال يُنظّم من قبل شركة “غازبروم” – الراعي الرسمي لفيفا وكأس العالم روسيا 2018. والهدف من هذا البرنامج هو إشراك جيل الشباب في جميع أنحاء العالم من أجل تعزيز أهم القيم الإنسانية بين أقرانهم – الصداقة والمساواة والسلام واحترام مختلف الثقافات والقوميات. وقد شاركت 211 دولة ومنطقة في برنامج كرة القدم من أجل الصداقة في عام 2018. وستقام الفعاليات النهائية من الموسم في موسكو، روسيا، في الفترة 8-15 يونيو/ حزيران من العام 2018.

وخلال قرعة السحب المفتوح تم تشكيل 32 فريقاً دولياً للصداقة، وكذلك تم تحديد أدوار اللعب لكل لاعب كرة قدم شاب من كل بلد (حارس مرمى، مدافع، لاعب وسط أو مهاجم). يتم تنظيم الفرق باستخدام مبدأ “كرة القدم من أجل الصداقة” – إذ سيلعب الرياضيون من القوميات المختلفة، والأجناس المختلفة والقدرات البدنية المختلفة في فريق واحد. عمر اللاعبين هو 12 عام. وسيتم تدريب كل فريق دولي من قبل مدربين شباب – وهم لاعبو كرة قدم تتراوح أعمارهم بين 14-16 سنة من بلدان مختلفة. كما وستغطي فعاليات البرنامج أكثر من 5000 وسيلة إعلامية من جميع أنحاء العالم، بالإضافة إلى المركز الصحافي الدولي للأطفال الخاص ببرنامج كرة القدم من أجل الصداقة، والذي يتألف من صحفيين يافعين يبلغون من العمر 12 عاماً من 211 بلداً ومنطقة. هذا وقد بدأت في جميع أنحاء العالم عمليات الاختيار الوطنية للمشاركين الذين سيصبحون سفراء شباب للسلام والصداقة والمساواة في بلدانهم.

Cornell receives $35M to support cassava development for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa

Ithaca, New York, Feb. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cassava is vital to the food security of millions of Africans who eat some form of the root crop daily. Although cassava breeders are making progress, they still face significant challenges in developing disease-resistant varieties that also increase overall yield and respond to the needs of smallholder farmers and processors. Cornell University will expand international efforts to deliver improved varieties of cassava to smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa with $35 million in new funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and UK aid from the United Kingdom.

“This grant funds a second five-year phase that will allow us to build on previous work and focus on getting improved varieties into farmers’ fields,” said Ronnie Coffman, international plant breeder and director of Cornell’s International Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, who leads the project.

During Phase 1 of the Next Generation Cassava Breeding project — also funded by the Gates Foundation and UK aid from 2012 to 2017 — researchers shortened the breeding cycle for new cassava varieties by improving flowering and using genomic selection. Through analyzing plant genotypes and identifying cassava lines with desirable traits, such as resistance to cassava brown streak disease or high dry matter content, breeders also improved their ability to make selections based on genetics and probability without having to wait for seedlings to reach adulthood. These methods save breeding time for a crop where flowering and sexual propagation are issues.

Another goal of Phase 1 was to make cassava genomic information publicly accessible on an open database. Cassava researchers all over the world are now comparing results and improving breeding programs without duplicating efforts by using Cassavabase. To reduce cost per progeny and improve the quality of data uploaded to Cassavabase in Phase 2, NextGen researchers will use additional methods of whole genome sequencing.

“Our focus for the next five years will be to translate this research into breeding practices to increase impact,” said Chiedozie Egesi, NextGen project director and adjunct professor of plant breeding and genetics at Cornell, who is based at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Nigeria. “A key goal in Phase 2 will be to identify traits preferred by farmers and end-users and incorporate them into new cassava lines to ensure that varieties are responsive to people’s needs.”

Egesi said, “We believe we will accelerate genetic gain as well as adopted genetic gain, increase the yields and resilience of cassava production by smallholder farmers, and move African cassava breeding toward greater capacity.”

“Among the 30 new clones developed at IITA using our methods, 10 had higher dry matter yield than any clone currently available for smallholder farmers in Nigeria,” said Jean-Luc Jannink, a research plant geneticist with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service  (USDA-ARS) and Cornell adjunct associate professor in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell. “Dry matter yield is a close proxy to food yield. Conservatively, we believe that we will increase the rate of genetic gain in cassava by 30 to 50 percent.” 

Said Peter Kulakow, IITA cassava breeder and geneticist: “Genetic gain is a measure of the improvement of plant performance between generations and a goal of most modern breeding programs. Swifter improvements mean more new varieties can be tested and released.”

At the sixth annual Next Gen Cassava meeting, Feb. 19-24 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, teams of NextGen breeders, geneticists, data analysts, computer programmers, food technologists, social scientists and crop protectionists will be focusing on goals for Phase 2 and discussing how to better coordinate and leverage the exchange of germplasm and genotypic and phenotypic data from each other.

Developing capacity for sustainable breeding programs

Compared with other major staples like maize, rice and wheat, cassava has undergone few advances in productivity and yield over the last 50 years, making it an ideal candidate for breeding improvement. Because cassava is clonally propagated and has a low multiplication rate, it can take almost six to eight years before a new cassava variety makes it from breeders’ nurseries through field trials to farmers’ fields. Most breeding efforts focus on product development  — goals set by scientists and researchers without accounting for the preferences of farmers. In practice, this can result in poor adoption of new varieties and unrealized potential.

“Breeders must be able to more quickly develop cassava varieties that resist diseases, are climate resilient and meet the needs of end-users and consumers,” said Egesi.

Strengthening the capacity of national breeding programs will be critical in achieving self-sustaining breeding systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Over the next five years, NextGen researchers will continue to train the next generation of sub-Sahara African cassava breeders in modern plant breeding techniques like genomic selection and improved breeding methods.

International and regional partnerships are another important element of sustainability. NextGen researchers are reaching out to their counterparts in Ghana, Rwanda, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo to create a broader network of researchers who can work together to improve livelihoods and food security.

In Africa, NextGen collaborators include the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the National Root Crops Research Institute and West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement in Nigeria; the National Crops Resources Research Institute and Makerere University in Uganda; and the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute in Tanzania. In South America, collaborators include Embrapa in Brazil and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture in Colombia. In the US, collaborators are Cornell University (who leads the project), the Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell, the University of Hawaii, and the USDA-ARS in Ithaca.

وقال وايزمان: “كنت أفكر أنني كنت في قمة العالم. كنت أحافظ على وزني ولياقتي، وكنت أهتم بنفسي عقليا وجسديا، وكانت علاقتي صلبة”.

ثم، وأثناء فحص طبي روتيني أثناء خدمته في الجيش في ولاية كاليفورنيا، اكتشف الأطباء أنه كان يعاني من مرض الرجفان الأذيني، أو فيب.

وقالت الطبيبة أندريا ناتالي، المديرة التنفيذية الطبية لمعهد تكساس لاضطراب ضربات القلب في مركز سانت ديفيد الطبي Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center إن “الرجفان الأذيني هو اضطراب في الإيقاع في الأذينات العليا للقلب حيث تفقد الأذينات العليا للقلب وظيفتها الميكانيكية، حيث لا تعود تنقبض.”

وقال وايزمان: “فجأة كل شيء تغير، ولم أعد قادرا على التدريبات الرياضية بعدها. وبدا أنني قد لا أعيش إلى الحد الذي كنت توقعته. كانت هذه كلها صدمات عاطفية لزوجتي ولي.”

وفي السنوات الخمس سنوات اللاحقة، خضع وايزمان ل 10 عمليات قلب، أربع منها عمليات استئصال،  وجراحة واحدة فاشلة لعلاج مشكلة اضطراب ضربات القلب لديه، ولكنها كلها فشلت في حل المشكلىة.”

وقال: “بعد ثالث عملية استئصال، بدأ جراح القلب الذي كان يعالجني في دنفر، في البحث عن بدائل عن أين يمكنني الذهاب في أنحاء البلاد وكانوا يقولون: لقد بذلنا قصارى جهدنا، ولا نريد أن تأخذ المزيد من المخاطر التي لا نشعر بارتياح إزاءها. وسوف نرسلك إلى أفضل طبيب في هذا الميدان في البلاد. فأرسلوني إلى الدكتورة ناتالي”.

تقول الدكتورة ناتالي: “إن العمر النموذجي لشخص مصاب بمرض اضطراب دقات القلب هو في أواخر الخمسينيات أو أوائل الستينات، لذا فإن ريان هو استثناء واضح، ولكن هذا مرض وراثي. لسوء الحظ، فلأن الأذين الأعلى لا ينقبض، فإن ظاهرة اضطراب دقات القلب يمكن أن تزيد من حدوث خطر السكتة القلبية وفشل القلب.”

مرض اضطراب دقات القلب هو أكثر أنواع أمراض اضطراب دقات القلب الأكثر شيوعا، وهو  يؤثر على الملايين من الأميركيين. ويمكن لهذه الظاهرة أن تسمح بتجمع الدم وتشكيل الجلطات في الزائدة الأذينية اليسرى. وإذا انفجرت جلطة الدم هذه، فإن بمقدورها الوصول إلى الدماغ، مما يتسبب في حدوث السكتة الدماغية.

TUV Rheinland Releases Wide-Ranging Study on Global Consumer Perception of Autonomous Vehicle Safety

COLOGNE, Germany, Feb. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — TUV Rheinland, a leading international testing service provider for quality and safety, today announced results from a global survey designed to assess consumer perception of safety of autonomous vehicles in different regions. The survey, conducted among more than 1,000 licensed drivers aged 18 years and above each in China, Germany, and the United States, reveals that trust in technology of completely autonomous cars is nearly twice as high in China as the other two countries. More than 63 percent of respondents in China believe driverless cars will increase road safety, while the figure is 34 percent in the United States and Germany.

Respondents were equal in the degree of importance placed on data protection and desire for assurances that autonomous vehicles will be protected against cyberattacks. Drivers the world over also wish to be able to decide for themselves when to let a car drive autonomously, and when to control it themselves.

Respondents convinced that automated driving increases overall road safety

While respondents generally agree that automation of driving will improve road safety, again we see a higher proportion of respondents believe this in China than in Germany and the USA. Interestingly, however, people’s doubts tend to increase and trust in the technology decreases as vehicles’ level of automation goes up. Only 11 percent of the respondents in Germany and 15 percent in the USA state they fear ‘a deterioration of road safety’ due to partial automation, while nearly half of those same respondents believe that road safety will deteriorate with the advent of completely driverless cars. In China, only 24 percent expect road safety to decrease in the case of driverless cars.

“When we see large swaths of motorists in China, Germany, and the USA share a belief that road safety will decrease as automation increases, it tells us we must give people much more information and communicate the benefits of autonomous technology more clearly,” said Dr. Matthias Schubert, executive vice president of mobility at TUV Rheinland.

The results of the international study echo the same trends shown in a similar TUV Rheinland survey from Spring, 2017 on the acceptance of autonomous driving in Germany. This study revealed that 75 percent of respondents generally view autonomous vehicle technology positively but, when looked at in detail, there are still many reservations about the technical implementation.

In the current study, 78 percent of all global respondents agree that it must be possible for a person to take full control of the vehicle at any time in the event of an emergency — this opinion is stronger in Germany and the USA than in China.

Cyberprotection leading indicator of trust in technology

Fear of cybercrime around autonomous vehicles is widespread among global motorists — especially in Germany. A full 76 percent of respondents in Germany believe that personal data can fall into unauthorized hands when using autonomous vehicles. The United States and China stand at 67 percent and 63 percent, respectively. In all three countries, respondents fear to an equal extent that autonomous cars could lead to increased vehicle crime due to people accessing the vehicles via technical means and data theft. This opinion was somewhat more prevalent in the USA, with 52 percent of respondents in agreement.

A majority of respondents think the systems of future cars should be updated regularly and automatically to ensure road safety and protection against cyberattacks. In China, 80 percent of respondents support “over-the-air updates;” the figure is 68 percent in the United States, and 64 percent in Germany.

Notably, in all three countries cyberprotection is so important that the majority of respondents (Germany 66 percent, USA 61 percent, China 60 percent) would change to a different make of car if hacker attacks were to come to light. On this topic, consumers in China are more likely to trust the competence of the manufacturers to develop autonomous vehicles that are protected against unauthorized access (71 percent). In Germany, the sentiment tends to be positive (55 percent), an opinion that has risen significantly compared to the survey from Spring, 2017. At that time, only 47 percent of German respondents held this faith. Americans show the least confidence in automobile manufacturers to build autonomous vehicles that are protected against cybercrime, at just 41 percent.

Data collection just as necessary as data protection

Most motorists today are aware that data in modern vehicles is recorded and transmitted to automobile manufacturers. This includes data on the state of the vehicle (e.g., mileage, error messages) as well as vehicle movement data (e.g., speed, position) or person-specific data, such as style of driving or seat adjustment settings. Just how well-informed do people believe they are on this matter? Very large differences show up here across the three countries: 55 percent of respondents in the United States say that they are rather poorly informed about which data is used for which purpose, who has access to the data, and how well-protected the data is. This is also the case for 52 percent of respondents in Germany. In China, however, only 15 percent of respondents believe they are poorly informed.

For all respondents, safety is a primary motivation for sharing data. Between 30 percent and 50 percent of motorists in all three countries state a specific desire to make their data available for breakdown assistance services, car insurance companies, testing organizations, automobile manufacturers, and state institutions. However, motorists are less willing to transmit their data to service and mobility providers, particular data app providers, automotive suppliers, automobile dealers, and infrastructure operators such as gas stations.

Finally, 71 percent of the Chinese respondents demonstrate a greater inclination (Germany 45 percent, USA 42 percent) to pass on their data for updating and using new services (e.g., for telematics services such as parking space finders).

Politicians and industry executives need to do their homework

The survey brings to light motorist perceptions that may impair the acceptance of autonomous vehicles and pose significant barriers to widespread adoption. To eliminate these kinds of obstacles, politicians and industry executives, in particular, need to do their homework. In Germany, more than half (53 percent) of survey participants believe it is most important for the driver to always be able to take full control of the vehicle. Furthermore, 49 percent feel the need for legal situations to be clarified further (e.g., questions of liability), and 37 percent want data protection to be ensured through a corresponding framework. For respondents in the United States, having a permanent option for the driver to take full control of the vehicle is also the top priority (47 percent). Proof of functional safety through tests comes a close second (45 percent). Following in third place is the protection of the car against unauthorized access (43 percent). For Chinese respondents, backup of personal data is the most important (43 percent), even more so than ensuring data protection (40 percent) and protection of the vehicle against unauthorized access (36 percent).

The survey on the safety of autonomous vehicles by TUV Rheinland in the context of autonomous driving was conducted in September 2017 via an online panel. For the study, TUV Rheinland polled a representative sample of around 1,000 each from China, Germany, and the Unites States aged 18 years and over and in possession of a driver’s license. It is the second study of this kind by TUV Rheinland; in Spring 2017, the company carried out a study on the acceptance of autonomous vehicles in Germany.
